Vice President, Engineering & Solutions Development Center

Location: Suwanee, GA

POSITION SUMMARY

The Vice President of Engineering, Heating and Air Conditioning Division, will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Solutions Development Center (SDC). This role coordinates the creation, development, design, and improvement of the company’s products and services in alignment with established goals and objectives. The VP will spearhead long-term planning for budget, headcount, and capital resources to ensure development needs are met. They will manage the organizational structure to ensure teams across product development, product design, testing, quality assurance, residential solutions, commercial solutions, and advanced technologies work cohesively to accomplish department goals.

The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide guidance and leadership to the engineering department to improve the efficiency of the design and development process, establishing a seamless process for new product development and enhancements.
  • Maintain an organizational structure that promotes technical, managerial, and leadership development to shore up the next generation of SDC leadership.
  • Collaborate closely with executive leadership, product planning, sales, and marketing functions at Mitsubishi Electric Trane US, Inc. (METUS), Mitsubishi Electric Sales Canada Inc. (MESCA), and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO).
  • Oversee the creation, development, and execution of the organization’s development strategy.
  • Oversee the product development process, including reviewing internal and external resources, establishing product development priorities and timelines, developing product cost/pricing estimates, and supporting product launches.
  • Establish and manage relationships with strategic partners to supplement current SDC resources and jointly develop new offerings.
  • Work closely with METUS, MESCA, and factories/design centers in Japan, Europe, and Mexico to ensure SDC developed products meet market needs, leveraging existing know-how, and are suitable for manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with the procurement team on sourcing strategies and key vendor agreements.
  • Work closely with government affairs group, coordinating the activities of SDC with Mitsubishi factories, AHRI, EPA, DOE, and major testing laboratories to ensure products are properly certified.
  • Provide oversight of refrigerant and mechanical development, focusing on achieving business and marketing objectives for the North American market.
  • Establish priorities for teams, monitor performance, and ensure goals are completed.
  • Manage the operating budget, work order plan, and headcount plan for the department.
  • Develop strategies and initiatives for improving organizational efficiency.

Organizational Management:

  • Improve the effectiveness of managers through training, accountability, mentorship and empowerment.
  • Review and update the department headcount plan twice per year to ensure sufficient and appropriate resources.
  • Update the budget plan twice per year.
  • Review P&L results monthly and adjust expenditure and headcount to ensure the overall budget remains on target.
  • Direct teams to estimate and maintain project schedules, identifying future risks and countermeasures.
  • Develop written procedures to ensure continuity of operations across planned and unexpected employee turnover.
  • Create and maintain a 2-deep succession plan for key positions across the department.

Technical Leadership:

  • Empower engineering teams to gather and synthesize information to solve engineering issues.
  • Provide focus, resolution, and clarity on technical priorities and judgments.
  • Set technical priorities and guide the department towards resolving technical issues.

Strategy Deployment:

  • Create resource utilization targets for capital assets.
  • Create a new cross-training initiative to promote engineering excellence.
  • Work with the quality department to formalize flexible guidelines for making release decisions for connected products.
  • Promote lightweight daily goal tracking to improve department productivity.

External Collaboration:

  • Actively participate in weekly meetings with METUS, PIMS (Mexico factory), and Mitsubishi Electric US (MEUS) leadership.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with key members of PIMS, METUS, MELWA (Wakayama, Japan factory), MELSHI (Shizuoka, Japan factory), and MEUS leadership.
  • Keep investment centers aware of new developments, delays, changes in cost targets, and project status.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required; MBA preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in executive level roles.
  • 10+ years of experience in a product design and development role, preferably within the HVAC industry.
  • Engineering and product development experience is required.
  • Demonstrated track record of leading a diverse team to successful outcomes.
  • Success managing P&L responsibilities.
  • Excellent presentation, negotiation, and influencing skills.

Travel: Up to 35%, both nationally and internationally.

Location: On site in Suwanee, GA 3+ days / week.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $220,000 and $250,000/year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including commissions based on achieving individual performance and/or sales metrics, incentive compensation and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these additional compensation and benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
